A busy weekend looms for the Chilliwack Chiefs, who have home games Friday (Cowichan Valley Capitals) and Saturday (Surrey Eagles) before a matinee in Coquitlam on Sunday.
As with any weekend in which the Chiefs play back to back home games, anyone purchasing two tickets for the first game gets a free ticket for the second game.
The Chiefs go into the weekend in fifth place in the Mainland division, eight points back of the fourth place Eagles.
Chilliwack has three games in hand on the Eagles and two on Coquitlam, so wins Saturday and Sunday would really tighten up the division.
Friday’s game sees the Caps and Chiefs meet for the second (and final time this season) within a week.
Last Saturday the Chiefs were in Duncan where they erased a 5-1 deficit with just over 10 minutes left in the third before losing in overtime. Ben Butcher scored the tying goal with 25 seconds left in the third.
Cowichan is off to a good start this year.
After winning just 13 games last season, they have nine wins in their first 18 games this season.
One Caps player who should have his own cheering section at Friday’s game is Chilliwack native Rylan Bechtel. It’s no surprise to see the 18-year-old defenseman wearing an A for the Caps. He’s a real solid player who you might not notice unless you key in on him. That’s a good thing as he does all the little things right.
Prior to Friday’s game the Chiefs will honor long time volunteer Marjorie Beck with a moment of silence.
Earlier this year Marjorie lost her battle with leukemia. She was an awesome lady who donated a lot of her time to the Chiefs organization. All proceeds from Friday’s 50/50 will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Saturday we’ll see the defending BCHL champion Surrey Eagles for the first time this regular season.
The Eagles are a much different team than last season with 18 players on their current roster that were not on that team. That includes former Chief Garrett Forster, who started the season with Coquitlam before being dealt to Brooks (Alberta). From there he was moved to Flin Flon and then the Eagles.
During the second intermission Saturday night former NHLer and national team member Dave Archibald, long time Chilliwack secondary school girls’ basketball coach Joe Ogmudson and the 1997 national junior fastball champion Chilliwack Turbo team will be inducted into the Chilliwack Sports Hall of Fame.
This is the first class to be inducted. Judy Fitzsimmons, the CSHOF president and her group have done a lot of work to make this happen.
If you are thinking of coming out to a Chiefs game with your family, a reminder that Family Packs, which include four tickets, four pops and four hot dogs are available for $42 including tax at the Chilliwack locations of Save On Foods, PricesSmart and Coopers Foods.
