A new program that combines night-time skiing and yoga at the 100 Mile Nordics Club is gaining traction.
“We’ve been thinking about having a ladies night for a long time and this worked out quite seamlessly when we decided to open the lodge until 7:30 [p.m.],” said Karen Johnson-Puckett, the organizer.
It was originally called Chicks on Sticks until a local yoga teacher came in and asked if she could lead a short stretch afterwards, what the organizers thought was a brilliant idea.
“We’re having a good time. It’s a natural combination. The two just go together so beautifully,” said Johnson-Puckett.
The name of the program changed to Sköga, a combination of skiing and yoga with a Nordic flair.
Johnson-Puckett added that there is room to join the 10 people who have become regulars to the event.
She also added that the cool thing about the program is that it’s comfortable to go out into the night for skiing with a group of people, where one might be a little weary about doing it alone. She also called skiing at night magical.
Lara Soukeroff, one of the participants, came out to join in the second week of the program because she loves cross-country skiing and it’s fun to do with the variety of women.
“I’m very excited for it. I’ve been excited about it all day. I think it’s good to get women together to go out and ski and then to wrap it up getting everybody together and doing yoga and finding your last bit of inner peace,” she said.
Eve Socha, a participant since the beginning, called it an awesome event. She said she was taken part for just the joy of it.
Sköga happens every Tuesday, starting around 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Women divide themselves into two groups called the Fast Foxes and the Stealth Lynx. For members of the club, it’s a one-time $10 fee. Guests pay a $10 drop-in fee. The program will run until the season is over.
