The Ultimate Warriors, Huckstables and Boom Goes the Dynamite all felt the sting of blown leads in ultimate Frisbee action last Monday.
All three teams built themselves what appeared to be comfortable cushions in their games as part of the Comox Valley Sports & Social Club’s spring ultimate league this week, only to find just how quickly momentum can change and leads can evaporate.
The Ultimate Warriors (3-3) carried an 8-4 edge into halftime against the Discs of Hazzard (3-3) and seemed to be in control with Gryphon Vester and Isaac Johnston providing some accurate throws and Steph Carew and Laura Locklin reeling them in for scores. But the tide changed quickly in the second half with Melissa Rollin tearing up the field like it was a racetrack while Pete Laird and Mike Reilly found their touch with the disc, propelling them to an eventual 13-12 win in the “B” Tier game.
Similarly, captain Alex Kennedy and Boom Goes the Dynamite (1-5) seemed to have an insurmountable lead at 10-6 and victory in sight in their “B” Tier game before running out of gas on some longer points and falling to captain Murray McRae’s Disc-Oriented Talent (3-3) squad by a 14-12 final. But perhaps the result that stung the most was the upstart Huckstables (3-3) and captain Kevin Elmore just missing out on a solid upset in the “A” Tier, coughing up two-and-three-point leads to captain Jesse Savage and the Disc Hoggs (5-1) in an eventual 13-12 loss.
Rounding out the “A” Tier of the 12-team league, captain Matt Hinch’s Crust (6-0) sit atop the standings with a win over Team Am-Erika (3-3), while A Thousand Monkeys (4-2), captained by Trevor Shoesmith, are rounding into their championship form, including a win over Jim Cunningham’s Ibex (3-3). And in the “B” Tier, the Slipped Discs (1-5) collected their first win of the season by a 13-8 count over Boom Goes the Dynamite, while Disc-Oriented Talent added their second win of the week with an 11-7 victory over captain Chris Boux’s Saucer Tossers (1-5).
A summer ultimate league starts soon, with spots for players of all skill levels and a registration deadline of June 27.
