Comox Cup road hockey tourney goes this weekend at 19 Wing Rec Centre

With ice hockey and the Stanley Cup over and done, the spotlight now shines on road hockey and the Comox Cup.

The 20th edition of Comox Recreation’s popular annual tourney goes June 17-19 at 19 Wing Fitness and Community Centre, with play beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 17. This is a new location for the event as its usual venue, Marina Park, is undergoing construction.

Amy Bauman, recreation programmer for Comox Recreation, says there are 12 teams registered in two divisions (Competitive and Recreational). “We will be playing rain or shine!” she said.

The defending champions, On Deck Classics and Greasy Road Wins, are back and hungry to make it two in a row. Both teams needed overtime to win their divisions last year: On Deck Classics edged Red 21 Grinders 5-4 in Division A and Greasy Road Wins got by Holberg Howlers 8-7 in Division B.

There will be a beer garden hosted by the Rink Minx roller derby team and a barbecue hosted by 19 Wing MFRC (Military Family Resource Centre). Parking around the 19 Wing Rec Centre parking lots will be limited, so carpooling is suggested.
