Comox mountainbiker wins Hammerfest at Englishman River Falls

Sunday's race series saw riders from Coombs, Parksville make top 12

Eighty six mountain bikers from around B.C. and the Yukon Territories took part in the Island Cup Race Series Hammerfest XC on Sunday, March 24 at Englishman River Falls.

The event was hosted by Arrowsmith Cycling Club and consisted of fun, mostly single-track courses for expert, intermediate and beginner cyclists to complete three laps of.

The events overall winner was 14-year-old rider Rory Bratrud from Comox, with a finish time of 43 minutes, 14 seconds.

The overall female winner was Mathilde, 14, from Whitehorse with a finish time of 48 minutes and 53 seconds.

Coombs rider Shawn Lidstrom, 41, made the top 10 coming in at 10th with a time of 57 minutes and 54 seconds.

Parksville rider Rusty Mercer, 12, came in a twelfth place with a time of 59 minutes and 40 seconds.

Hammerfest is the second race of the 2019 Vancouver Island Cup Mountain Bike Race Series.

The next event will be the Campbell River XC at Snowden Trails on April 7.

The series is British Columbia’s premier grassroots race series spanning the length of Vancouver Island. Cross Country, Downhill, Enduro and Marathon disciplines are brought together from numerous local mountain bike clubs.
