The Comox Valley Cubs are preparing for the Roy Hobbs World Series baseball tournament, in Fort Myers, Fla., in the 60+ age group, Nov. 12-19.
The team consists of seven players from the Comox valley, six from Hamilton, including former Komox Masters member Kelly McGiffen, a player from Vancouver, one from Alberta and three from Ohio.
The weather has smiled favourably on the locals, who have been able to practice two to three times a week.
Kevin Dobbelsteyn, recovering from a midseason injury, has been working tirelessly to get in playoff shape.
Dave Odamura is also recovering from an injury from an unnamed sport, and hopes to peak at the right time.
Dale Greene, after a dominant year in the Masters League, has been a force at the “Jake” at Highland, the batting cage at BMP, and the CBC.
The versatile speedster Ron Freeman, has been working on his fielding and back-catching skills, as well as on the mound, in case he is needed for some mop-up duty. Perennial foot soldier Gary Ardron has also been very active, honing his skills, contributing with his always positive and encouraging attitude. Local sports figure Tony “I got it, I got it” Wishart, will be leaving his comfort zone to play outfield for the tournament.
Although always an enjoyable week of baseball, this year will be less colourful without Daryl Egeland. Daryl you will be missed.
The team would like to thank Brian “Jake” Plante fon his time and effort helping at every practice, hitting infield, outfield, cut-offs and being a positive influence on the boys.
Team manager Dave Fauteux will have his work cut out for him this year with a roster of 18 hungry, eager players. Although no bloodshed is expected, feelings may get hurt.
There are 44 teams in the 60+ division this year; one from the East Coast – Nova Scotia – and one from the West Coast – the Comox Valley Cubs. Results can be viewed online at the Roy Hobbs World Series, or reports to the Comox Valley Record newspaper.
