The Oceanside Generals don’t win many games, so it would be fair to call their 5-3 win over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Dec. 11 an upset.
The Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League North Division cellar-dwellers fired four third-period goals to knock the G-Kings into third place, percentage points behind Nanaimo Buccaneers.
After a scoreless first frame Sunday afternoon in Parksville, the Generals went up 1-0 late in the second stanza. The game opened up in the third, with Oceanside taking a 4-0 lead by the midway mark.
The home team led 5-1 at the 14:28 mark before Matteo Giomo tallied two goals just 10 seconds apart to cut the lead to 5-3 with 1:18 left to play. But the Yetis would get no closer as the Generals posted their seventh win of the season in 28 games.
Willie Daigneault scored the other Comox Valley goal. The Icemen out-shot Oceanside 39-34 with Marcus Gloss taking the loss and first star Tanner Douglas getting the win.
Neither team could connect on the power play; Comox Valley going 0-for-5 and Oceanside 0-for-2.
Lack of power was also a factor in the G-Kings’ scheduled Saturday night home game against Kerry Park Islanders. “The game … was cancelled by the Sports Centre due to lack of power,” a Glacier Kings’ spokesperson noted.
“The lights went out at approximately 2:30 on Saturday afternoon and did not come back on until after 5 p.m. We had to make a decision early as Kerry Park had a long way to travel and the road conditions were not great. We will reschedule the game in the new year,” the spokesperson added.
The Glacier Kings wrap up the 2016 portion of their schedule with home games Friday, Dec. 16 (7:30 p.m. SC#1) against Victoria Cougars and Monday, Dec. 19 (7 p.m. SC#1) against the Generals.
After the holiday hiatus, the G-Kings ring in the new year Tuesday, Jan. 3 at home against the Saanich Braves.
