Comox Valley Glacier Kings working overtime in recent VIJHL games

Back in 1973, Bachman Turner Overdrive was “takin’ care of business and working overtime.”

Fast forward to 2016, where the Comox Valley Glacier Kings were attempting to emulate BTO’s success with that same work ethic in a pair of Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League games.

They succeeded on Oct. 20, defeating Victoria Cougars 4-3 in double OT, but came up just short on Oct. 22, falling 6-5 to Oceanside Generals in the first extra frame.

Both games were close, with the teams trading tallies right up to the final buzzer.

On Oct. 20 at Archie Browning Arena, the G-Kings trailed 2-1 after one period but scored twice late in the second stanza to pull even. After a scoreless third and first OT, third star Dylan Paavola (from Jake Mackenzie and Derrick Smith) netted the winner 42 seconds into the second extra session with the teams playing three-on-three.

It was the Yetis’ fifth straight win. Smith, Jackson Gibson and Willie Daigneault had the other Comox Valley goals while VIJHL Player of the Week Finn Withey had two helpers.

First star Marcus Gloss picked up the win, making 41 saves.  Anthony Ciurro, who stopped Mackenzie on a penalty shot late in the second period, made 31 saves.

On Oct. 22 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre, goalie Matt Henwood of Comox turned aside 44 shots to lead the Generals to a 6-5 OT win over the G-Kings.

Comox Valley led 2-1 after one with the visitors up 4-3 after two. Oceanside was up 5-4 midway through the third before second star Withey’s second goal of the game pulled the Yetis even with 3:05 left. But third star Matthew Rokosh (unassisted) gave the Gens the win at 1:05 of the first OT period.

First star Smith, Marcelo Pericao and Daigneault netted the other Comox Valley goals. William Cawthorn started in goal for the G-Kings and took the loss, making 16 saves in 32:53 minutes. Gloss finished the final 28:12 of the game, making 11 saves.

The Glacier Kings (11-3-0) are second in the North Division, three points back of Campbell River Storm (13-3-0). They are on the road Oct. 27 with a game against the Nanaimo Buccaneers then close out the October portion of their regular season Oct. 29 at home against the Peninsula Panthers, a 7:30 p.m. start at Sports Centre #1.

ICE CHIPS Smith is second in league scoring with 12 goals and 18 assists while Withey is fourth with 10 goals and 12 assists…the Cougars played a rare, penalty-free, Jr. B game on Oct. 20…complete stats and updates at www.vijhl.com…
