Despite beating the reigning U21 B.C. champions in Esquimalt, a junior curling team from the Comox Valley needs a few more wins to qualify for the provincials.
Team Richards — consisting of skip Gracelyn Richards, third Keelie Duncan, second Bryn Woloshyn, lead Kate Eisner (who plays out of the Port Moody Curling Club) and fifth player Cailyn Collins — beat Team Daniels of Delta at the Esquimalt Optimists’ Junior Cashspiel on the Remembrance Day weekend.
However, the Delta rink was crowned BC Junior Curling Tour champions by securing the most points over several events. By so doing, Team Daniels qualifies for the 2020 B.C. Junior Curling Championships, Dec. 28-Jan. 2 in Victoria. The Richards team, which finished second out of 15 teams on the tour, needs to qualify through regional playdowns.
The Richards rink is the only side to beat Team Daniels — and they did it three times.
Next up for the local side is the U21 Island playdowns Nov. 29-Dec.1 in Kerry Park, followed by a U18 open event in Kamloops.
