The Comox Valley United men’s soccer team defeated Gorge FC 2-1, Saturday at the Vanier turf. With two wins and a loss, CVU sits in a three-way tie for second place in the top division of the Vancouver Island Soccer League.
Grayson Chalifoux scored both goals for United, one in each half of play. The striker leads the league in goals scored with five in just three games.
“The lads put in a really tidy and professional performance,” coach Stefan Szkwarek said. “It was a gritty win that required a full team effort for 90-plus minutes, and everyone who got on played very well. Our opponent played very direct all game but we stuck to our possession-based game model and created a lot of chances, carrying play throughout the game. On another night, we would’ve scored five or six, so huge kudos to the Gorge keeper who kept them in the game.”
CVU’s next opponent is Bays United, which leads Division 1 with three wins in three games. Kickoff is 4:30 p.m. at Oak Bay High School in Victoria.
The game will be the second meeting this season between the two teams. Up four goals at the half, Bays beat CVU 5-3 Oct. 10 at Vanier.
“I’m extremely proud of the response from the team after a poor performance in the first half against a very good Bays United side,” Szkwarek said. “A lesson learned and very good to see the strong character of the team shining through.”
