Comox Valley United’s Jackson Cup hopes crushed by Westcastle

Call it a “cupset.”

Comox Valley United was blanked 1-0 by Westcastle in Round #1 Jackson Cup play Feb. 21 in Victoria.

The two teams finished the regular season at opposite ends of the 10-team Vancouver Island Soccer League Div. 1 standings – United in second place with a 12-3-3 record and second-best goal differential of +18 while Westcastle was ninth with a 4-13-1 record and division-worst goal differential of -36.

During the regular season United had defeated Westcastle 4-0 in Courtenay and 4-3 in Victoria. All signs seemed to point toward a first-round cup win for United when they went down-Island on Feb. 21.

But it was not to be. Jon Shaw scored early in the match and Westcastle made it stand up for the winner.

“The biggest upset of the bracket so far,” noted VISL executive president Vince Greco. “We knew there would be an upset somewhere in the cup. Unfortunately it was us,” United tweeted. “Good luck the rest of the way.”

While United now waits to see who they will meet in Provincial A Cup play later this year, Westcastle will prepare for their second round Jackson Cup match when they meet Div. 1 Lakehill on March 5.

Other quarter-final contests see Div. 1 Saanich Fusion vs. Div. 2 Prospect Lake, Div. 1 Cowichan vs. Div. 1 Nanaimo and Div. 1 Bays Liquor vs. Div. 2 Nanaimo.

Semifinals go March 18-20 with the final April 3 at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria.
