Jennie Currie exploded for four goals as the Vernon Controllers grounded the Shuswap Kaos 6-1 in their opening match of the North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Association Masters Division playoffs Friday night.
Deanna Baker and Michele Wernicke chipped in a goal each to commence the six-team tourney.
Saturday morning, the Controllers fell 2-0 to regular-season champion Vernon Chick Kickers.
A strong backline of Val Percy, Jody Pope and Brandie Hunter had their hands full trying to contain the potent Kicker attack.
Playing their final match under a red-hot sun, the Controllers ended their season with a 2-0 shutout of Goplen Drillers to collect second place.
Val Percy finished a nice pass from Ang Durfeld after a Baker corner to open the scoring 35 minutes in.
Shortly after, Currie notched her fifth of the weekend as she buried a feed from Durfeld off another Baker corner.
Working hard in the heat, the Controllers could not add to their lead while keeper Michelle Embleton earned the shutout.
Shawn Yargeau, Krista Copeland, Durfeld, Wernicke and Leslie Epp were strong in the midfield all weekend.
Kylah Bryde scored the lone goal on a scramble as the Drillers downed NOU 1-0 Saturday. Shawn Nickoli earned the shutout at the Goplen girls earned third place.
Driller coach Darren Zupp gave honourable mention for the defensive line of Vel Beaumont, Kulwinder Smith, Tracey Hill and Jodi Peshko.
Seasons Sistas fell 2-0 to the Drillers in a close competitive game Friday night.
In the last five minutes, the Drillers broke the scoreless deadlock with two late goals. Shelley Zupp, who went down in the opening minutes with shoulder injury, returned to score the winner off a pass from Chris Castrucow and Stephanie Curtis.
Right before the final whistle Lisa Lanaway curved a high cross into the far top corner to seal the win.
The Sistas then came up short on a pair of shootout games.
Down 2-0 to Kaos with five minutes left, Becky Birbillis scored two outstanding goals to force a shootout, which Koas won 5-4.
Andrea Zubot, Sherry Wiebe, Lisa Geary and Birbillis scored in the shootout.
The Sistas then ended regulation tied 0-0 with NOU before falling 2-1 in a shootout.
Zubot, facing her former NOU teammates, was the lone shootout scorer for Sistas.
