Every penny counts.
That’s the message from Dave Dickson, safer communities co-ordinator and one of seven Williams Lake riders participating in this September’s Cops for Cancer Tour de North.
“It’s an important cause,” Dickson said, who will ride 900 kilometres to help support kids with cancer and their families with a group of 25 other riders from Fort St. John to Williams Lake from Sept. 13-19.
Over the course of June, July and August, local Cops for Cancer riders, along with the support of the Williams Lake and District Credit Union, hosted a series of three fundraising barbecues.
Last Wednesday Elaine Sager, executive assistant with the WLDCU, presented the riders the money raised, totalling $2,148.90.
It’s the fourth year the WLDCU has hosted fundraising barbecues for the riders.
“It’s a big event for our community because they’re going to be arriving here to end the ride Sept. 19,” Sager said, adding there will be a gala barbecue at 7 p.m. following the riders’ arrivals at Thompson Rivers University in Williams Lake. “It’s the first time the ride has ended in Williams Lake.”
This year local riders are riding in honour of seven-year-old Chase Lamont, who battled cancer last year.
“Things are going good for him right now so we’re hoping that continues on,” Dickson said.
Also at the gala Sept. 19 Williams Lake resident Amanda Sherwood — a family friend of Lamont’s — will be shaving her head in his support.
Tickets to the riders gala are a minimum $10 donation to Cops for Cancer in advance and tickets are available at the WLDCU, M&M Meats, Canadian Tire and the Canadian Cancer Society office.
Other riders from Williams Lake participating in the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de North are Scott Austin, Brendan Charma, Brian Evans, Casey Charles, CHris Romanchych and Steve Stewart.
