Some accurate counterpunching helped one of Mission City Boxing Club’s fighters clinch a victory at the recently held Golden Gloves competition.

Matt McIntosh won his bout against Queenborough Boxing Club’s Selem Hamed 14-2, effectively taking control and dominating the match after the first round, said coach Dale Gatin.

The score was tied at one after the first, he said, but coming out of the second round, McIntosh started to put together more aggressive combinations. Between the second and third rounds, Gatin said Hamed was starting to tire and advised McIntosh to stick to counterpunching, which put the score in his favour.

Dedicated time in the gym has helped the young fighter evolve from a quick puncher, to one that now has power behind his technique.
