Cowichan’s Div. 2 team picked up its first win of the Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association season on Sunday morning, beating Prospect Lake 1-0 at Layritz Park.
“First win of the season was a big one for us,” Cowichan co-coach Darbi Aitchison said. “And we’re hoping to hang on to the energy as we have a few weeks off before our next game.”
Samantha Walker scored the lone goal of the match off a corner kick, the ball rocketing around the box for a moment before she was able to put it home.
“The game was well-fought through both halves, with Prospect putting a few close shots on net in the first half,” Aitchison reported. “Cowichan picked up the offence in the second half and was able to keep it in Prospect’s end for most of the last 45 minutes.”
Cowichan will have the next two weeks off before getting back into action on Oct. 21, when they visit Gorge FC.
The Cowichan Cougars lost 3-2 to Gorge in their Over 30A match at Evans Park on Sunday morning. Ashley Stultz and Stacey de Lusignan scored the goals, while Sara Tweten had an excellent outing in net. Head coach Darian Achurch handed the reins to injured player Alita Mattin for the match.
With nothing this weekend, the Cougars will return to the pitch on Oct. 14 in a road game against Vic West.
