Cowichan played solid soccer against second-place Castaways in their women’s Div. 2 match at Saanich’s PISE field last Saturday, but Castaways managed to capitalize on their opportunities, beating Cowichan 6-2.
Cowichan defended well against Castaways in the first half, but three well-delivered shots were able to get through the Cowichan defence and past the goalkeeper.
“We handled their offensive pressure well, allowing for less given space between us and our opponents,” Cowichan coach Darbi Aitchison said.
Not giving up despite the 3-0 halftime score, Cowichan altered their game plan at the break, and it paid off in goals by Nicole Pugh and Sammy McLean.
“We made some excellent changes for the second half, adjusting our shape and formation on the field to allow for a stronger offensive push to make a comeback,” Aitchison said.
Castaways didn’t stop shooting, and another three shots found their way into the net.
With two wins, six losses and one tie, Cowichan is eighth in Div. 2. The team could gain ground on seventh-place Gorge this Friday when they host Gorge at the Sherman Road turf, kicking off at 7:30 p.m.
