Cowichan Piggies beat Comox in exhibition test

A mixed squad of veteran First Division and developmental men’s players from the Cowichan Rugby Football Club hit the road last Saturday to take on the Comox Kickers in an exhibition rugby match.

Both teams had to cope with stormy weather, and in the end the Piggies prevailed 38-5.

“There were pools of water all over the place, so we played a close contact game and kept the ball close,” Cowichan coach Andrew Wright said. “The day kind of cleared up, but it had gotten worse and worse and worse as we got up there.”

Jenner Teufel had a perfect day kicking, opening the scoring with a penalty goal, then slotting the conversions on all five Cowichan tries.

“He converted everything on the weekend,” Wright noted. “He was obviously really pleased.”

Following Teufel’s opening penalty kick, the Piggies got two tries from Peyton Eagar and led 17-0 at halftime. Seth Davis scored a try early in the second half and Eagar completed the hat trick before Comox finally got on the board. Drew McCarthy rounded out the scoring with the last try of the day.

The Comox team includes players from Campbell River and Powell River, carrying the standard for rugby north of Nanaimo.

“It’s good for North Island rugby,” Wright said.

The Piggies are off for the Thanksgiving weekend, but are still training as they prepare to host the Port Alberni Black Sheep on Oct. 15, kicking off at 1 p.m.
