The Cowshore First Division women’s rugby team continued its strong late-season play with a 60-10 win over Brit Lions in Delta on Saturday, improving their chances of hosting a first-round playoff game.
The host team was looking for its first win of the 2018-19 season, and looked good in the early going.
“Brit Lions are in last place, but came out strong and got on the board five minutes into the game,” Cowichan’s Sherry Spence reported. “The Cowshore ladies were slow to shake off the ferry legs, but came back strong in the second half when they had the wind at their back. It was a very windy day at the park, and going against the wind was a challenge to say the least.”
Carolyn Gudmundseth and Jenna Bugden each had three tries, while Tyson Beukeboom, Laura Russell, Dani Robb and Leanne Bilous had one each. Tanya Jones slotted all five of her convert attempts in the second half.
Cowshore will host first-place Abbotsford at Westshore’s field this Saturday at 11:15 a.m. Cowshore could conceivably move into second place if they can beat Abbotsford and if Nanaimo loses at home against Brit Lions.
