Coyotes wrap up regular season with split

OC finishes Canadian College Baseball Conference season at 15-13, heads to Lethbridge this week for league finals

The Okanagan College Coyotes are in Lethbridge for the Canadian College Baseball Conference’s year-end championship tournament which begins on Wednesday.

The Coyotes concluded their 28-game regular season over the weekend at Elks Stadium and earned a split to finish with a 15-13 record.

Saturday afternoon Marcus Drewry improved to 5-0 as the Yotes hung on for a 6-5 win over the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack.  Drewry threw six solid innings, allowing two unearned runs, scattering six hits and struck out six.

Saturday night the Coyotes matched up with the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners.  The clubs each traded a four run inning, the Coyotes in the bottom of the third, before the Mariners tied it in the top of the fifth.  The teams each scored a run in the eighth, setting the tables for extra innings.

In the top of the 11th the flood gates opened and the Mariners scored seven runs, securing a 12-5 victory.

On Sunday the Coyotes matched up with the same two teams.  Prior to the morning game the Coyotes honoured senior Garrett Wiese playing in his final regular season games.  Wiese has started all but four games over the course of his four years in the program.

For the second consecutive day the Coyotes and Mariners played in extra innings and the Mariners claimed a 3-2 victory scoring the top of the 10th off reliever Taylor Thomas.

Then the final game of the regular season against the Wolfpack, Joel Lamont earned a complete game shutout as the Coyotes claimed a 1-0 victory in a rain-shortened game.  He allowed two hits and struck out seven.

Fittingly, Wiese scored the winning run in his final regular season game.
