Courtenay Recreation’s gymnastics program participants put on a great presentation of their skills on March 12 at the 52nd annual Comox Valley Gymnastics Championships.
Over 60 gymnasts from Courtenay Recreation participated in this fun-filled event. The floor, vault, parallel bars, balance beam and trampoline were all used to demonstrate the skills learned throughout the year.
Trophies were awarded to: Hope Isenor; Girls Best all Around, Chase Balbon; Boys Best All Around, Kenisha Anderson; Commitment to Excellence, and Isabella Guthrie; for Outstanding Effort.
A new trophy was created this year in honour of long-time gymnastics coach Vern Nichols. “Vern has been with Courtenay Recreation’s gymnastics program for the past 50 years, and has spent much of his time growing and developing the gymnastics program, and making it what it is today,” a CRA spokesperson said.
“This new award is aptly named the Vern Nichols Dedication and Drive trophy and was awarded this year to Zachary Balbon.
“A special thank-you to all our volunteers, Dairy Queen, and Engrave-It for helping make this event a memorable experience for recreational gymnasts,” the spokesperson added.
