The Creston Chiefs peewee hockey team is pleased to announce that Creston has been chosen to host the 2013 provincial hockey championships for peewee tier 3 from March 17-21, 2013. The team expects to host nine teams from all over B.C. and the Yukon. These players are just 11 and 12 years old, so many of their families will likely attend as well, bringing to town around 135 families for the week.
The Chiefs are in the early stages of organizing and would like to invite interested members of the community or service groups to join the organizing committee. A number of players on the Creston team were fortunate to be able to play at the provincial championships in Quesnel last year. As a community — their organizing committee was largely non-hockey members — put on a fabulous tournament and made the visitors all feel very welcome, and the Chiefs hope to meet or exceed their efforts.
A number of fundraising initiatives are planned and the team will be seeking sponsorships, as well. In addition to games, there will be a banquet for players and officials, and both opening and closing ceremonies. Each team will play one or sometimes two games a day, leaving plenty of free time to enjoy all that the Creston Valley has to offer.
The peewee Chiefs are very excited to be hosting this event and welcome the expertise and assistance from the community to make this a memorable tournament for all who attend. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase our community.
