After preparation all summer, on Aug. 4 and 5 the Creston Wave Swim Club attended regional championships in Colville, Wash. Swimmers needed to place in the top three in the region or obtain a provincial qualifying time (PQT) in order to qualify for provincial championships. Six swimmers represented the club at regionals and all six qualified for provincials in Nanaimo from Aug. 16-19.
Div. 6 girl Anita Bjarnason got five personal bests and obtained a silver medal in the 50-metre freestyle, 100m breaststroke, and 100m freestyle.
Carter Pelly got a best time in her 100m freestyle and got a PQT in the Div. 2 girls 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke. She also got gold in the Div. 2 girls 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m freestyle, and a silver in the 50m butterfly.
Emily Simpson swam hard, getting five best times and obtaining a PQT in te Div. 5 girls 100m breaststroke. Emily also took home silver in the 100m breaststroke, and bronze in the 100m and 50m freestyle. Kieran Simpson went some season bests in his races and obtained a silver medal in the Div. 6 boys 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:21.08, and bronze in the 200m individual medley (IM). Sierra Simpson took off time in seven out of eight of her races and brought home two bronze medals in the Div. 2 girls 50m breaststroke and 100m IM.
Coach Kevin Woykin also had season best times in most of his races, taking home silver in the Div. 8 men’s 200m IM and 100m backstroke, and bronze in 100m freestyle.
The div. 6 girls relay consisting of Bjarnason, Emily, Pelly and Sierra also qualified for provincials, placing second in the region in both the medley and freestyle relays.
