he Smithers Cross Country Ski Club held its annual Chris Dahlie Open up at the BV Nordic Centre over the weekend.
Thirty-six participants, from ages six to 60 hit the trails in the day-long event that featured races, a prize draw and lunch.
The club switched its focus this year from a results oriented race day, to one encouraging participation and fun.
Part of the goal was to get adult members of the club who normally don’t race, to come out and give it a try.
The club also received a $5,000 donation from BV Credit Union as club sponsor.
“It was a good turnout, given the cold weather and the fact that we had some skiers away,” cross country club executive Ken Eng said.
“Everyone enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the chance to have a good, fun day.”
Next weekend, many of the racers from the club will head to Prince George for the Western Canadian championships.
“For the competitive racers who weren’t at a race this weekend, it was a good chance to get in some practice before the Western Canadians.,” Eng added.
Following that, a few of the racers will travel to Mission for the B.C. Winter Games
