Thinking about entering this year’s Mind Over Mountain Adventure Relay Race? Too late – the 2014 version is already sold out.
The Saturday, Sept. 20 race in Cumberland has a full field of 500 competitors. Organizers note there is a wait list, and those interested can email info@mindovermountain.com. “We usually have a few spots open up closer to the race as racers cancel their entries due to injury,” an event spokesperson noted.
Organizers note Cumberland is an adventure racer’s dream destination, filled with world-class single-track trails, breath-taking terrain and set in a cozy little historic mining town. This MOMAR will feature kayaking, mountain biking, trekking (trail running/hiking), maybe some bushwhacking and possibly a few mystery challenges too. It will be a test for both the seasoned weekend warrior and the dedicated novice.
The 50K Enduro course features approximately 10K of paddling, 25K of mountain biking and 15K of trekking. The 30K Sport course is approximately 5K of paddling, 15K of mountain biking and 10K of trekking.
Participants will not know the order of the stages and it is very likely that the biking and trekking stage will be broken up into multiple stages. For example, a MOMAR course may require you to paddle, bike, trek, bike, and then trek to the finish line. For the most part, teams will be required to self navigate from one checkpoint to the next; however, some sections of the mountain bike stage may be flagged.
Teams can expect to finish the MOMAR in 4.5 to 8 hours for the Enduro and 3 to 6.5 hours for the Sport. All teams must cross the finish line by 5 p.m. or face disqualification. There will be a series of time cutoff points to ensure racers make the finish line time deadline.
“We encourage you to put the fun into the race by coming in costume and compete for the highly coveted Spirit Award. The team with the best costume and spirit will take home comp entries to the next MOMAR and Merrell gift cards for new runners,” MOMAR notes on its website.
The MOMAR after-party is legendary and was voted “Best Post Race Party” by Get Out There magazine readers for three years in a row. “Celebrate a gruelling day of racing with your fellow racers and volunteers at Mount Washington Alpine Resort,” say organizers. The night features a gourmet dinner, an awards presentation with tons of great draw prizes, and ends with an after-party at Fat Teddy’s. All racers and volunteers get a ticket with their race fee.
