100 Mile House’s Hannah Lindner is among the province’s top young curlers hitting the ice in Lake Cowichan for the 2015 Tim Hortons BC Juvenile Curling Championships, March 5-8.

The local 13-year-old is a member of a Prince George rink representing the Cariboo at the provincial bosnpiel, which will see over a dozen under-18 teams descending on the Vancouver Island community.

Lindner is shooting second with the Prince George girls – Jessie Withey (skip), Carly Connor (third) and Carsyn Hamilton (lead) – whom she met at a Rockslide Summer Curling Camp last summer.

Together, the girls won the Curl BC Zone 8 Playdowns in Williams Lake in January, which was Lindner’s third time competing at a regional playdown, and her first time winning one.

“It was very exciting to get somewhere this year,” Lindner says. “It was a great experience.”

Lindner practices regularly with local coaches at the 100 Mile Curling Club, and with her teammates in Quesnel and Prince George.

Shooting second means Lindner throws her rocks after the lead.

“Basically, the duty is taking out the [opponent’s] rocks, which is a big responsibility of the second,” she explains. “And also sweeping with the lead. Sweeping is a big part of our job.”

Lindner has always enjoyed curling since she started seven years ago after moving to 100 Mile House from Kelowna.

“I love the strategy of it all and how it works. I just really enjoy it. It’s always been curling for me.”

She expects the championships in Lake Cowichan to be a busy time, and a lot of fun.

“We’re going to be one of the youngest teams there. I think it’s going to be a blast. I’m just going to enjoy myself.”
