A rink of men’s curlers are taking a second shot at the Kelly Cup in Prince George this week.
The Evans rink narrowly fell short of the cup last year, losing 7-6 in the finals to Smale, a Kelowna-Prince George team.
The bonspiel started yesterday, March 30, and wraps up with the Kelly Cup playoffs and finals on Sunday, April 1. The rink includes lead Jordan Johnson, first John Evans, second Kevin Dodderidge, and skip Greg Morgan from Kitimat, and Evans said they are going in with no expectations but hoping for the win.
“We’re going in with no expectations, going to play our best. It would be awesome to win,” he said.
“You just never know. If we were a team that played together, practiced together, we might have a better indication,” he added, noting that the team is a handful of strong, experienced players who play with different teams in regular leagues and tournaments.
The only time they’ve played together was last year in the Kelly Cup, where they surprised themselves with a series of strong victories, advancing them to the finals where they just barely lost to take silver.
The Kelly Cup this year has 41 teams, and Evan’s said they are eager to play.
