The 100 Mile House Curling Club held their annual mixed curling bonspiel over the weekend.
“It was just wonderful, had a great time,” says Maria Hamilton.
There were 15 teams in attendance, most of them local, but also Freeman out of Mission, Stoutjesdyk our of Hope, Bell with two players from Mission and Hercun from Kamloops for a total of 60 curlers.
There were a number of juniors who played, which is not common in the mixed, says Hamilton.
“We’ve had juniors in our ladies’ and our men’s but our mixed doesn’t usually have juniors.”
Junior Chance Bourassa, skipped a team to third in the B event, with junior Ethan Sikiric finishing third in the C event while juniors Rachel Sikiric and Logan Sikiric finished fourth in the C Event.
There was food available on Friday night, more of a snack according to Hamilton, with a dinner on Saturday night. Since there are no taxi’s in 100 Mile House, Hamilton says they make sure there’s a shuttle service.
The events go to 1:30 a.m. says Hamilton, adding that curling finishes at 12:30 a.m. on Friday night and 9 p.m. on Saturday.
“It was lots of fun. I’m kinda glad to be home and resting. There’s a lot of preparation, a lot of volunteer hours and preparation time as you can imagine … There’s a big team of people who put this together and it takes a lot of hours to do so. It’s nice when it’s successful.”
In the A event, Team Mitchell finished first (comprised of Skip Jim Mitchell, Lead Karen Kartwick, second Jim Hartwick and third Gwen Mitchell), in the B event, Team Boyson finished first (comprised of skip Met Boyson, Lead Debi Messner, second Dave Bolton and third Jean Gilbert and in the C event, Team Bell finished first (comprised of skip Terry Bell, Lead Robin Smith, second Cory Smith and third, Dianne Menzer).
There are two more bonspiels this season, with the men’s bonspiel held from Jan. 19 to 21 and the Ladies’ bonspiel from March 2 to 4.
Aside from public curling held on Monday’s at 6:30 p.m., there’s a turkey shoot coming up in Lac la Hache on Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. which includes a pot-luck. It will be $5 for three rocks and everyone is welcome with turkey and ham prizes.
