In their last year as juvenile curlers, the Fraser Valley (Zone 3) female team has a BC Winter Games gold medal.
Dezeray Hawes of Anmore skipped her team to first place in the eight-team competition, clinching the gold with an 8-1 victory over Alyssa Connell of Prince George and her Cariboo-North East (Zone 8) teammates.
Hawes scored three in the third end to open the scoring, then stole another in the fourth. Connell earned her first point on the fifth end, but Hawes closed it out with two more in the sixth end and a steal of two in the seventh.
Both teams in the gold medal match were undefeated after the first two days of play, each finishing atop their groups in the round robin.
“Every shot was big out there. You miss one shot and you’re in trouble, right?” said Hawes. “So you have to try and make them all.”
Her teammates were Callin Cooke of Chilliwack, Jaymee Lynn of Port Coquitlam, Everly Royea of Chilliwack. The team curls out of Royal city Curling Club in New Westminster.
Earning the silver were Connell, Bailey Eberherr, Jordan Henson, Jennilee Slaney and Julianne Slaney, all of Prince George.
