Curling season comes to an end in Golden

A Event Champs

A Event Champs

It is clear to see where the minds of many local curlers are now that the official end to the curling season has come forth; many are dreaming of golf. After the final stones made their way down the sheets of ice during the Funspiel on Saturday, March 19th, one of the sheets was transformed into a putting green. A putting green? Yes, a putting green.

It was a means of welcoming in spring and bidding farewell to a great winter of curling. The golfing took place at the end of the Golden Funspiel; a two-day, six end, raucous tournament that had the finest curlers in the land out in abundance.

The bonspiel was of a mixed variety; men and women, of all ages, teamed up in an attempt to be crowned Funspiel Champions. And, it was the women, in reality, that shone the brightest out of the hacks. In fact, in the A Event Final, a game that eventually went to Golden’s own David Wachna, there were seven women and only a single man in the game!

After all the curling and golfing and carousing, people settled into the Curling Club Lounge for a little Karaoke put on by Elite Sound and Light; eyelids were nearly as heavy as stomachs after devouring a wonderful feast put on by Canyon Creek Catering. But, the musical night did not take long to get into swing, as harmonic lungs, and even some that were not, brought an end to the 2010/2011 curling season for all in Golden.
