Four Cowichan Women’s Football League teams made it through to the semifinals of their respective divisions at Sun Bowl XXXI — the Pacific Northwest Women’s Football Championships — at McAdam Park last weekend.
The Crew and the Shehawks (known as the Hindsight Fishing Ravens in the CWFL) made the semis in the Top Flight division, while Moo’s Law reached the semis in Almost Top Flight, going on to win the division, and the Mother Truckers (a.k.a. the Winter Trucking Storm) made the final four in the Grounded division.
The Law beat the Vancouver Panthers 13-6 to win the Almost Top Flight division, while the Bomb Squad beat the Blowfish 1-0 to win the Grounded division. The Top Flight title went once again to the top-seeded Texas Adrenaline, who dispatched the Vancouver Chargers 26-6.
In the view of Sun Bowl organizer Chris Mann, the best game of the weekend featured the eventual champs taking on the reigning CWFL champions.
“The most exciting game of the tournament was the Adrenaline matchup with the Shehawks,” he said. “The two teams put on a fantastic show of skills that left your heart pumping on every play.”
Rikki Wylie of the Shehawks, Judy Souw of the Vancouver Ravens and Leah Meyer of the Vancouver Sirens were named the best offensive players, while Kesia Lankford of the Adrenaline, Chelsea Morton of the Mother Truckers and Natasha Sidhu of the Panthers were named the best defensive players.
The Vancouver Sirens were named the most sportsmanlike team, Back in Black won the Spirit Award, and the Adrenaline’s Jo Overstreet was named MVP.
Mann had special thanks for International Women’s Flag Football Association president Diane Beruldsen, Ken and Val Chambers, Jackie Harrison and the Crew, Country Grocer and Beverly Corners Liquor Store, Cowichan Minor Football, Jaimie Coulter and her hockey team, and the City of Duncan parks crew.
