The Duncan Christian School Chargers played to a sixth-place finish at the B.C. Christian Schools boys soccer championship in Langley last weekend.
Despite missing some key players, the Chargers got off to a good start on Friday with a 3-0 win over Westside Academy of Prince George in their first game. Early scoring chances indicated that DCS would dominate, but there were a few missed opportunities before Greir brothers Josh and Jesse scored five minutes apart, Jessie’s goal coming on a shot to the far corner. Josh Greir scored again in the second half to round out the scoring.
The Chargers second game was a tougher one against host Credo Christian. The goalkeeping of Andrew Young behind a strong defence kept DCS in the game, but the Chargers could only muster one goal as Stevens scored on a pass from Nathan Powell.
Abbotsford Christian gave the Chargers another challenge in the first round of the playoffs the following morning. Abbotsford scored a questionable goal in the first half, but the Chargers didn’t give up and managed to even the score on a shot by Powell in the final minutes. DCS ended up prevailing 5-4 in the penalty shootout.
Advancing to the fifth-/sixth-place game, the Chargers played a close match against Vernon Christian, with Vernon prevailing 2-0.
“The boys were injured and tired and did extremely well despite some setbacks,” coach Chris Muller said. “Mr. [Ian] Smith, Mr. [Peter] Terpstra and I are very proud of the work ethic our players showed and it was a very rewarding tournament indeed.”
