Hard work and high achievement both in and out of Duncan Christian School’s athletic programs earned the BC Christian Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s Jack Boersma Junior Athlete Awards for Jaymie Brandsma and Nathan Powell.
According to the BCCSSAA, the Jack Boersma Awards are given to Grade 10 students who show evidence of athletic ability and performance, scholastic achievement and goals, leadership and character, and school, community and church participation. The award comes with a $250 bursary toward a sports camp of the recipient’s choice.
Brandsma was Duncan Christian’s Junior Girls Athlete of the Year, MVP of the senior girls basketball and volleyball teams, a key member of the senior girls soccer team, Most Inspirational Player on the junior badminton team, and an official in volleyball and basketball. Outside of sports, she was an active member of the Cowichan 4H Club, had a lead role in the school’s musical, No One Knows, and volunteers in her church’s Sunday School and nursery programs. She also received the school’s Student of Distinction award.
Powell was named an Outstanding DCS athlete, and showed strong leadership on all of his sports teams. A talented soccer player for the school and Gold-level community teams, he was an Island tournament all-star in senior boys basketball, Most Improved Player on the DCS badminton team, and an official in soccer and basketball. He excels in the classroom and contributes to the school’s positive atmosphere. Outside of school he volunteers as a sound system person at his church, and also volunteered at the 2018 BC Summer Games.
