Deep Bay’s Kevin Biro is in his final season as a member of the UBC Thunderbirds men’s baseball team and with playoffs now underway, Biro hopes to see his team go on a deep run to cap off his time there.
It’s been a difficult season for Biro, with a few injuries throughout his last season a T-Bird. But with the playoffs beginning last Tuesday, Biro said he feels good.
“Things are pretty good right now,” Biro said. “I had a wrist injury to start off the season and there’s been a couple times where I’ve been hurt.”
“You just kind of get to the point where it starts to get better and then at the later part of the season, even if you’re still hurt, your mind just takes over,” he said.
“I’m ready to go for the playoffs and I’m hoping to see our team finish off strong and as champions.”
The journey has been an adventurous one for the Kwalikum Secondary School graduate, who started in Oceanside Minor Baseball, making the jump to the B.C. Premier Baseball League with the Parksville Royals.
He also managed to earn his way on to the Canadian National Team when he was in Grade 10.
After all that, Biro found himself with the opportunity play for the UBC Thunderbirds under head coach Terry McKaig. The journey might be coming to a close for Biro after this season is finished, but it’s been an enjoyable one.
“It’s been a fun ride so far,” Biro said. “I’d say that being able to represent the Canadian National team was the most exciting thing to happen for me on a personal level.”
“It was also tough the following year, not being invited back to tryout for the team, that one really made me into the player and person I am today. It just showed me that nothing is given to you in life and that you have to work hard for everything that you earn, no matter what it is.”
But the journey isn’t finished just yet as Biro and his Thunderbirds will look to cap off their season with a deep run in the playoffs and hopefully a championship to go along with it.
Even through the ups and downs, Biro remains positive and upbeat about his team’s chances and knows it’s going to be a challenge.
“We’re capable of winning out, for sure,” Biro said.
“Of course, that’s the goal every season is to win the championship.”
“We feel like we’ve got a good group of guys here that have the chance to do it and that’s what we’re hoping to see come out of it.”
“It’s been a great season and we’ve all worked hard so now it’s time to put it all together and go out there and win,” Biro summed up.
