Team Canada’s players are looking like world-class winners at the 2019 World Lacrosse Men’s Indoor Championship in Langley, and two Maple Ridge Burrards are leading the way.
Curtis “Superman” Dickson has had 12 goals and 12 assists through the four games, and is tied with his late-season Burrard teammate Dane Dobbie for the team scoring lead. Burrard Ben McIntosh has an impressive seven goals and 11 assists through three games.
They led the host nation to a 4-0 record in pool play, as Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, and the Netherlands all won their respective pools following the first five days of action at Langley Events Centre, which wrapped up on Monday night.
The four winners will be joined by Iroquois Nationals, the United States, Israel, and England in the eight-team championship bracket started Tuesday.
Burrard Jean-Luc Chetner is lead Israel in scoring after the round-robin with five goals and 10 assists.
The remaining dozen teams will battle in the placement bracket to determine the final standings for numbers nine through 20.
Canada beat the Iroquois Nationals 19-12 as the two top-seeded teams met in their final game of the round-robin on Monday.
The Iroquois Nationals used a potent power-play to score four goals and lead 7-6 at the break. But with the score tied at eight, Canada pulled away with 11 of the next 15 goals.
“In this tournament, there are guys that could put up a lot of points if they wanted to get off script and do their own thing, but they have very committed to playing the system and doing things that are going to translate to moments like this – games against tougher competition,” said Canada coach Glenn Clark. “The discipline, the commitment to systems, and the honest game that they have played, it has been a real good buy-in.”
The next action for Canada will be Sept. 26, 8 p.m. at Langley Events Centre Arena Bowl.
