Their only reward is the satisfaction of a job well done.
Nanaimo United’s Div. 2 men’s soccer team (13-7-2) won’t accept promotion to the Vancouver Island Soccer League’s Div. 1 in 2011-12 despite earning the right with a second-place finish in 2010-11.
“It would not be good for the club to try and put two teams in the Div. 1. We wouldn’t have the bodies right now for that,” said Allan Jorgensen, club manager.
There was some dissension in the ranks as Jorgensen said some Div. 2 United players were upset to learn their side wouldn’t be promoted.
The manager pointed out that just because the Div. 2 team isn’t moving up a division doesn’t mean that individual players can’t make the jump to the next level.
“It’s open tryouts every year. They will have a chance to play in Div. 1; it’s all in their hands on what kind of effort they want to put into their playing,” Jorgensen said.
He added that keeping United teams in separate divisions was written into the soccer club’s constitution a year ago.
