Dr. Lee Dental/Checkers spotted the Little Tex Outlaws an early 1-0 lead and then got serious, grounding the Outlaws 6-1 in North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Association Competitive Division play Tuesday night at Marshall Field #1.
Christine Neilson, who ran miles all night, scored in the 10th to give Little Tex the lead.
The 9-4 Floss crew then went to work with Kirsten Dodds, set up by Jacquie Hansen, at 20 minutes, equalizing. Just 10 minutes later, a shot by outside half Kimberly Teichman deflected off a Tex player and gave Anita Rea no chance in making the save to put Dr. Lee up 2-1.
A hand ball in the box with six minutes to go in the half made it 3-1 as Dodds converted the penalty kick.
Teichman, on a great header from an Irene Arrotta corner, made it 4-1, and then Madison Kaneda, on a lovely three-way passing play from Andi King and Dodds, made it 5-1. Leah Frye, from King, completed the offence with five minutes left.
The defensive line of Loren Brunelle, Dana Reid, Bobbi Cormier and Cindy Worth shut down the 9-4-1 Little Tex offence, with Lisa Goodgrove running miles in the middle. Lisa Arrotta recorded the win in net.
Keeper Anita Rae was solid for the Outlaws, who got a usual stellar showing from Jordan Mercer and a great game from from Lori Phillips.
Ghattas scores a beauty for NET
TED United grounded the North Enderby Timber 7-2 in Salmon Arm, opening the scoring early with a dribbler.
The Celtics went down 2-0 midway through the first half but didn’t stop working and got a goal from Heidi Holtmann, who snuck through United’s offside trap.
United (10-2-2) scored five more as the Celtics (2-12) went down to nine players due to injuries. Gabby Ghattas scored possibly the goal of the year, men’s or women’s soccer.
She beat several defenders, leaving her with one defender and the keeper to beat. The defender tried to play Ghattas hard with the body.
Ghattas used the momentum to spin off the defender which left her turning onto her left foot before she hammered the ball top shelf, short side .
“It was an amazing goal from an amazing player on what I would call arguably the best goalie in the league,” said NET coach Graham Ross.
In Masters play, the Okanagan Impact extended their undefeated streak to 11 games by crushing the Shuswap Kaos 8-1 at Marshall #4.
Edeen Ramsey pulled the hat trick for the 10-3-3 Impact, who got singles from Kim Wiebe, Heather Findlay and Shelinda Morin, Sue Herring and Janelle Smithson.
The Impact received excellent support from Denise Connor, who displayed great hustle, passing and control all game.
Findlay, who played up front and midfield, was terrific at being first to the ball with some great challenges.
The Shuswap goal was a beautiful high shot, which keeper Kris Ponto, despite showing unbelievable athleticism, couldn’t stop.
The heavily-favoured Controllers (9-4-3) and the upstart Seasons Sista’s (2-11-2) battled to a scoreless draw at Marshall #5.
The Controllers, who bowed 1-0 to Calgary BMW in the B final of the 32nd Shuswap Soccer Tournament on the weekend, had players coming out of their cars on to the pitch looking totally disorganized for the 6:30 kick-off.
It wasn’t until Kim Sylvester unleashed a 30-yard rocket with keeper Leslie Epp making a tremendous save 13 minutes in, that the Controllers woke up. Until then, the Controllers were thoroughly outplayed by a team they had iced 8-0 previously.
Legs were not an issue as the second half started with coach Doug Macdonald settling the Controllers down and they responded, totally dominating the Sista’s the rest of the way.
The Sistas defended well, withstanding the onslaught, unable to get out of their own end, but in the end earning a well–deserved tie.
Jenny Currie and Brandie Hunter were great on the Controllers’ backline, as were midfielders Jacquie Nuyens, Ang Durfeld and Corinne McWhinney.
Coach Kerry Zubot had the injury-plagued Sista’s prepared for another shot at the Controllers, but ran into extreme pressure early.
The back line was ran by Sherry Wiebe, who was named the La Senza Player of the Game along with keeper Pam Zalcik by referee John Peel, stopped the charging Controllers numerous times.
Honorable mentions go to outside defender Helene Clarke who played her heart out playing in unfamiliar territory, as well as Deb Whitling and Angela Otto doing their best to keep the younger Contollers’ forwards off the scoreboard.
Gizelle Duquette and Lesley Williams, at midfield, also played with intensity and grit. Andrea Zubot rung a hard shot off the crossbar and played most of the second half with a heel injury and barely able to run.
The Sista’s gave it all they had to earn the tie playing for their co-coach Shawn Wiebe in the hospital with some health issues.
Chick Kickers shut down Merlot
The Chick Kickers maintained their No. 1 spot with a decisive 4-0 win over the Shuswap Merlot at Marshall #2.
The 12-2-2 Chicks, playing with no subs, demonstrated some great Brazilian tactics and pace in building up the play to create a number of near misses along with their goals.
Kelly Challen and Jenny Garnett had the hot feet as they both tallied two goals and left the Merlot defence with coverage problems on who to cover in their relentless pursuit of the ball.
Shauna Stenquist and Monica Holubowski contributed with a couple of helpers, while Wendy Martens, in tandem with Corrie Bauml, covered every part of the field from the central midfield.
Next up for the Chicks is the second-place Salmon Arm Setter’s Pub, with the winner earning the regular-season title.
Drillers brush back Setter’s
With their coach Darren Zupp away at band camp, the Goplen Drillers upset Setter’s 4-2 at Marshall #3.
Back from foot surgery and playing her first game of the season, Chris Castrucow fed Tina Garrison to open the scoring. Setters tied it up a couple minutes later with a boot that deflected off a Driller defender.
Forwards Geri O’Brien and Lena Urquhart worked very well together the entire game with Urquhart assisting O’Brien’s goal and O’Brien setting up Urquhart’s snipe.
The back line of Vel Beaumont, Tracey Hill, Jodi Peshko and Nancy Nickoli were unbeatable, clearing the ball in front of veteran keeper Shawn Nickoli, who recorded several brilliant saves.
Stephanie Curtis was valuable in the outside midfield with her great checking skills, while Kelly Megyesi was a huge support on and off the field with positive feedback.
Sister-in-laws Karen and Shelley Zupp worked hard on the forward and half line, respectively. Garrison enjoyed a solid game with great hustle and booming shots.
Her second goal was the result of quick thinking and good timing when a shot from O’Brien deflected off the keeper and Garrison was there to bury the loose ball. The Drillers went to 4-8-3, while Setter’s dipped to 10-2-4.
