Missing a key cog, the Walnut Grove Gators adapted their game plan.
The result was the same however: another dominant victory.
The Gators were playing the Brookswood Bobcats in the Grade 8 girls Langley district championship game last week (Feb. 10) at Walnut Grove Secondary.
Coach Bailey Hubscher said the team switched from their usual fast break offence to one more focused on the half-court game.
And in the end, the Gators won 68-26.
Anneke Cairnie (14 points) and Sophia Wisotzki (10 points) led the Walnut Grove offence.
The win continued a trend for the Gators as they went 9-0 in Langley league play, with their average margin of victory at 39 points.
“We have a group of team players who are not afraid to pass the ball and get it to where we need it to be,” Hubscher said. “And our defence, we don’t let teams score very many points against us.”
The Gators are competing this week at the Fraser Valley championships, hoping to continue their stellar season. The team has won four tournaments — taking top spot at tournaments at Abbotsford Middle, Enver Creek, H.D. Stafford and Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle — as well second in another.
Walnut Grove will be joined by Brookswood, Credo Christian and Langley Secondary at the Fraser Valleys.
