Dr. Knox Middle School has a monopoly on Grade 8 basketball in the Central Okanagan.
Both the Falcons girls and boys teams claimed the zone championships last weekend in Kelowna.
On the the girls’ side, Knox defeated the KLO Cougars 37-31 Saturday in the final game.
After Knox took a convincing lead through three quarters. KLO battled back to pull within a point. A couple of timely baskets late in the game however by Paige Watson—who finished with eight points—allowed the Falcons to hang on for a 37-31 victory. Olivia Aviani and Paige Espenberg also chipped in with six and five points, respectively, for the Falcons. Robin and Chelsea Espenberg coached the girls’ champs.
KLO team B won the bronze.
In the boys final, Knox came up against a tough OKM team and prevailed 49-40.
It was a closely contested affair with Knox pulling away in the fourth quarter, led by their backcourt tandem of Nic Lafontaine with 17 points and Ben Hitchens who had 13 points and seven assists.
The Knox boys are coached by David Lafontaine and Dan Bernheisel.
OKM B team won the bronze.
