Dragon boat sprinters make a splash

Annual dragon boat sprint races on Skaha Lake

When the spray finally cleared it was a pair of out of town teams collecting the hardware in the A division finals of the 11th annual Okanagan Super Sprints Saturday.

The event takes place on a 250-metre stretch of Skaha Lake and is a fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy Canada and is part of the Penticton Dragon Boat Society race schedule.

In the women’s mixed A division final race it was the ODBRC Flowriders of Kelowna winning in a time of one minute 9.19 seconds, just ahead of Penticton’s Despirit Housewives, 1:12.67. KDBC Stroke of Luck was third, 1:18.49.

Kamloops’s Kamodo Dragons was first in the mixed A division championships in a time of 1:06.05, beating out Thunderstrokers at 1:06.70 and FLCC Fortified, 1:13.15.

Penticton’s Survivorship breast cancer survivor team was first in the women’s B event at 1:17.97, ahead of two other local teams, Hidden Dragon Crouching Cougars, 1:20.70, and 22 in Sync, 1:21.31.

Women’s C division champs were KDBC One Fun Crew, 1:25.79, ahead of Golden Dragons Women, 1:28.17. Golden Dragons Mixed were the D winners, 1:22.75, beating out Skaha Underdogs, 1:25.41.

As part of the weekend there was also the third annual Senior Sprint.

Kamloops Interior Dragons won the mixed A final, 1:13.70, ahead of FLCC Fortified, 1:05.71.

Women’s A winners was Golden Dragons Women, 1:19.03, ahead of Survivorship, 1:15.37, while Golden Dragons Mixed won the B mixed final at 1:13.19, in front of second-place 1:19.94.

The next event locally is the 18th annual Penticton Dragon Boat Festival Sept. 8 and 9.
