A Campbell River dragon boat team has won silver in the women’s races at the Race the River regatta, which took place at Tyee Spit on Saturday.

Nanaimo’s Chix with Stix took home the gold, finishing three seconds ahead of River Spirit in the 380-metre race across the Campbell River estuary.

“We had a great time,” said Brenda Gunn, captain of River Spirit. “We really enjoyed racing against them.”

She said the Nanaimo team has a competitive edge because its paddlers are relatively young.

Chix With Stix completed the final match with a time of 1:49.54, compared to 1:52.39 for River Spirit. Another team from Nanaimo, the Welly Waveriders, won bronze with a 2:08.25 race.

In the mixed races, Comox’s Prevailing Wins took the gold (1:51.15), followed by Victoria’s FGPC Dragon Flyers (1:52.61) and Nanaimo’s Nusa’lon Dragons (1:56.22).
