Williams Lake’s Daine Dubois scored the overtime winner to cap a thrilling comeback win as the Cariboo Cougars defeated the Valley West Hawks 4-3 on Sunday in Prince George to earn a weekend split.
Dubois’ goal, with just a half second left in the extra session, came moments after Jeremy Gervais hustled on the backcheck to pick the pocket of Hawks’ forward Bryce Anderson’s breakaway attempt. Gervais led the counter attack and after Devin Sutton narrowly missed scoring the puck came to Dubois in front and he fired it past Hawks goalie Dorian Luding.
Mason Richey, Hunter Floris and Craig MacDonald also scored for the Cougars. Former Cougar Tyler Ho with two and Jonas Leas scored for the Hawks.
Marcus Allen turned aside 27 shots to pick up the win in net.
The Cougars improved to 5-1 on the season with the win. The Hawks fall to 5-0-1 with the overtime loss.
Leas broke a 2-2 tie at 3:22 of the third period as he tucked in the puck at the side of the net on a Hawks’ power play to give Valley West their second lead of the game.
MacDonald scored the tying goal at 16:53, firing the puck into an open net after a series of Cariboo chances left the Hawks chasing the Cougars around the Valley West end. Dubois picked up the assist.
The spectacular three on three overtime followed with Dubois as the hero.
The Hawks took the opener 8-0 on Saturday. The visitors scored four in the first period and never looked back. Zach Wickson and Allen split the duties in the Cougars’ net. Gurney led the way for the Hawks with a goal and three assists.
