Dave Flooker used his head to score the only goal of the game and the Shady Rest Eagles hung on for a tough 1-nil win over the Nanaimo Masters last Sunday in Over 55 Men’s soccer action.
Played out at the Ballenas Secondary School field, the two longtime adversaries turned in another tight match under clear, cool conditions.
Flooker scored what would prove to be the game-winner with 10 minutes left in the opening half when he headed in a Keith Watson corner kick.
“It was a good game,” agreed Shady Rest Soccer Club president Jim Cameron, who reffed the match, adding, “Nanaimo is traditionally one of our toughest opponents but we got a really good all-round team performance today.”
Flooker and central middy Bob Duncan were the men of the match, and also earning props from the prez were Roger Jinks and Cliff Craven along with Jim Mitchell and Watson, “who was dominant on the right wing.”
Veteran Eagle central striker Dietmar Baumeister was running hard as usual and pressured Nanaimo’s defenders with his speed.
GAME ON
The O55 Eagles are back at it April 3 on the road in Courtenay. The O45 Eagles are in action in Campbell River this Sunday. The O35 Eagles recently won their club’s first ever league title and playoff championship.
Editor’s note: In Tuesday’s News, the Over 55 players photos were used alongside a story featuring their younger counterparts. My mistake.
