The Elementary School Track Meet went off without a hitch last week, with close to 300 Grade 1-7 students from nine schools taking to the track at Haley Park on Thursday.
After a school lock-out almost waylaid last year’s meet, on Thursday teachers, students, and volunteers pulled off a seamless event that has been one of the highlights of the school year for the past 70 years.
Under perfect conditions, and blue-bird skies, the meet saw 14 records broken, nine of them track records, including two by Judah Makway of St. Michael’s School in the 100 metre and the 400 m. sprint.
Individual aggregate award winners were:
Grade 4 boys – Rhys Williams, Glenmerry, Grade 4 girls – Jordan Singer, Kinnaird, Grade 5 boys Austin Soltesz, Kinnaird, Grade 5 girls – Brenna Paulson, Fruitvale Elementary (FES), Grade 6 boys – Josh Mason, FES, Grade 6 girls – Megan Caron, Glenmerry, Grade 7 boys – Tyler Sutherland-Catalano, RSS, Grade 7 girls – Jasmine Drolet, Ecole SS, and Allison Schroder, FES.
It was also FES teacher-organizer Brian Baldwin’s 17th meet, who said it wouldn’t be possible without the help of parents, the Grade 6-7 FES students, and most of all Trail Track and Field coach Dan Horan who puts in countless hours organizing and assisting with the meet.
