The rain stopped just long enough for the Prince Rupert’s rugby club to enjoy an intrasquad scrimmage and bring, an end to a season that saw the teams record improve.
Thirteen of the Seamen played Aug. 26 on the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre field to play several games which, while friendly, had a competitive edge and intensity to them.
Team captain Cody Curry said he was happy to have the team together one more time, especially the younger players who will be returning to their highschool team in the fall.
“It’s good for the guys, it’s good for morale and good to get a game going where it’s competitive,” he said.
This season, the Seamen finished with a record of 2-3, which Curry said was an improvement from last year. Included in that record was an impressive victory over Prince George, who has one of the stronger teams in the league.
“It was one of the better games we’ve played in a long time, which is good to see,” he said.
Curry said it was good to see the team have a stronger year as it will help the club grow.
“It’s important for the young guys to see that it’s alive,” he said. “When people think of sports in town, they typically think of soccer, hockey, baseball or other North American sports, but we want them to see that rugby is doing well too.”
