The province’s love for angling will be passed down through generations as communities across the north hold events for Family Fishing Weekend (June 16-17).
Quesnel’s Rod and Gun Club is responsible for a fishing dock on 10 Mile Lake, where the local celebrations will be held this Saturday (June 16).
Bob Monk, the club’s president, says anyone is welcome to come cast a few lines at the event regardless of whether they have a licence.
“There are prizes and hot dogs,” he says.
“In the past we have given away life jackets and fishing rods, all kinds of stuff.”
Loaner rods, reels and tackle will be provided for those who do not have their own gear.
The event will also offer opportunities for learn about new gear available, share fishing trip stories and learn about environmental stewardship and the tradition of recreational fishing.
Local conservation officers show up to do life jacket checks and inform those gathered on some of the rules and regulations for the popular pastime.
“Co-ordinating events over the Father’s Day weekend is an opportunity to remind people fishing is often a social activity. It’s not only the solitary angler casting on a lake. It’s a way to spend quality time with other people in the outdoors,” says Family Fishing Society of B.C. president Wayne Saito.
“We see all generations at Family Fishing Weekend events from the very young who will be holding a rod for the first time to parents and grandparents proudly sharing their own fishing tips and techniques with the next generation.”
The Family Fishing Society of B.C. was established in 2001 to encourage new anglers as well as promote and co-ordinate Family Fishing Weekend and other angling initiatives targeted toward families and young people.
2018 marks the 19th year of the licence-free fishing weekend.
Other locations participating include Alexis Creek, Atlin, Kitimat, Prince George, Smithers, Terrace and Williams Lake.
