Thanks to Peninsula fastballer Emma Bowman’s big bat, the 97A Devils were the only team in the Western Canadian Peewee A Girls Fastpitch Championships to hit several home runs.
Their stellar performance at a recent tournament in Winnipeg won them a silver medal.
Coach Norm Johnson said the girls’ high athletic ability contributed to their win.
“They’re a very dynamic group of young athletes.”
The four other Peninsula members of the team — Rily Jones, Madelyn Hagedorn, Marissa Reedeker and Courtney Sjerven — were integral to the 11-player team’s win.
Johnson said Hagedorn is a talented shortstop and the other three can “play anything.”
The Western Canadian Championships were composed of two teams each from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan, and three from Manitoba.
The Devils lost their final game to the other B.C. team Sunday evening after beating them in the morning.
Johnson said because the girls are so competitive, the second-place win was an initial letdown.
“Silver was kind of anticlimactic — you have to lose to win silver.”
The under-14 Peewee A division is the highest level athletes this age can play.
The team made it to Westerns after qualifying in the top half of teams at the provincial championships in Surrey in July.
