Popular dirt jumping event to return after two-year hiatus

Bikers will have a chance to showcase their skills when a popular dirt jumping event returns to Fernie after a two-year hiatus.

The Wam Bam Dirt Jump Slam will be held at the Fernie Dirt Jump Park on Saturday, August 25 from 2-8 p.m.

Local sporting store GearHub is hosting the event, which has lapsed over the past two years due to the amount of organization required.

“There’s a lot behind the scenes that goes on and events like this it’s not like a big money maker or anything like that, it’s just about having a good time,” said GearHub owner Mark Hall.

“That’s kind of what’s been the case the last couple of years – not enough volunteers, not enough resources – so we decided to just take it on ourselves and host it again.”

The dirt jump slam is open to riders aged eight and older, with a strider category for young children.

Hall is hoping the event will attract about 50 competitors, who will be judged on their tricks, style and amplitude.

The dirt jump slam will also feature live DJs and food stalls.

“This has been a local favourite, it’s always had a great turnout and what I love about it is you see a lot of the young kids, the up and comers, the next generation of riders,” said Hall.

“It’s just a great venue for the industry, for biking, for the grassroots, for the kids to kind of strut their stuff.”

Participants must be Fernie Mountain Bike Club members to compete with limited $25 subsidies available.

Entry is free for striders and $50 for other competitors, which includes a t-shirt and prizes.

To register, visit Gearhub.ca or sign up in-store at 401 1st Ave.
