With their second consecutive triumph after an eight-game losing streak, many Forestry Hockey League prognosticators are perplexed with the Jekyll and Hyde BCS crew heading into the New Year.
Their latest victory, 6-5 over Fraser River, is a prime example of what they are capable of when their switch is in the on and upright position.
But this FHL insider believes their recent success can be pinned on the resurgence of Jim “Soupy” Sales playing with the grit and gristle of his 1980’s Kangaroo heydays.
His winning goal and three assists in this game gives him a respectable four goals and six assists in his past four contests to vault him into 14th in the scoring parade.
Captain Kevin “Nightrider” Hesslegrave also had a fine morning as he matched “Soupy’s” output and Gord “Barbecued” Salmons unleashed his patented howitzer for two goals and an assist.
Fraser River put up a good fight but with a three-game losing streak will have to avoid too many sweets over the Christmas break in the super competitive 25th edition of the FHL.
Doing their best to force extra time was the speed-kills trio of Levon “Young gun” Johnson, who had a hat trick and Jason “Junior” Johnson and Ian “Heartbreaker” Hannah, who combined for two goals and two assists.
The other contest saw Serenity storm out of the gates only to be overrun by the Bear boys who won going away, 6-3.
Leading the way for the Crimson Crew was Todd “The Body” Gryschuk who was flying down the wing all morning to score his first hat trick since February 18, 2009!
Helping “The Body” slurpee his way to success was the 7-11 combo of Lee “Nitro” Naeth and Jason “Firecracker” Forman who drew apples on all of his goals and they combined for two goals and six assists.
Also having a big game for Bear was Glen “The Chemist” Boudreau who won several key face-offs and he scored an unassisted beauty to boot.
Even with the loss, Serenity has a three-point lead over their nearest rivals but with plenty of roster moves to deal with in 2019, it’s anybody’s guess if they will continue to find success in the New Year.
