Barriere/Little Fort do it again!
This year the carpet bowlers in B.C. were excluded from the BC 55+ Games being held in Kimberly/Cranbrook, so Kamloops Tournament Capital Games invited and sponsored carpet bowlers from around the province and Yukon to join their tournament.
Thirty teams gathered at Pacific Way Elementary on Sept. 8 and 9.
It’s the first time that many teams have gathered together and the first time a team from Yukon participated.
The competition was fierce but fun.
The teams were divided into six groups. The first day’s play determined where each team placed the second day, either the blue, red, white, yellow, green or orange group, in that order.
We are pleased to report that Donna Smith’s team of Donna, Lil Klassen and Adrienne Campbell placed first in the red group; Ernie Yungen’s team of Ernie, Charlie Pecor and Robert Strachan place first in the yellow group; and Dennis Bombardier’s team of Dennis, Paulette Bombardier and Bruce McAllister placed first in the green group.
In my opinion, Little Fort’s team of Hector Denton, Pete Verhoeven and Sharon March won the overall gold medal for stepping out to allow a surprise team from Radium Hot Springs to play. Through no fault of their own Radium was overlooked when Kamloops did the registration.
Only two Kamloops volunteers, out of a requested 14, showed up to help with measuring and setting up and taking down.
The two young women did a great job on Saturday but Hector, Pete and Sharon did the bulk of the measuring. The lack of volunteers meant Mel Sasek, from Clearwater, who was asked to help Nina Clearwaters umpire the games, did a lot of the measuring as well.
Scoring that many teams would have been a nightmare without Bob Currie, who drove all the way from Telka with his computer program. It took no time at all for him to print out the results.
Hats off to the Ambulance crew who sat patiently watching. Thankfully that’s all they had to do.
It was a busy weekend but one people asked to be repeated. We’ll see.
