First players confirmed for PGA Tour Champions event at Bear Mountain

Calcavecchia, Sluman, Mize and Tway have 41 combined wins on PGA tours

Four players with long professional golf pedigrees have been confirmed for the $2.5 million Pacific Links Championship/PGA Tour Champions event at Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa.

Mark Calcavecchia, Jeff Sluman, Larry Mize and Bob Tway, who have a combined 41 victories on the PGA Tour and Tour Champions (formerly the Seniors Tour) circuits, were announced Tuesday as the first committed entries into the Pacific Links tournament, happening Sept. 19 to 25 on the mountain course.

All four golfers won majors during their stints on the PGA Tour. Calcavecchia captured the 1989 British Open at Royal Troon, while Sluman and Tway won the 1988 and 1986 PGA Championship, respectively.

Mize is known in golf history circles for his amazing chip shot off the 11th green and into the cup at the 1987 Masters that ultimately allowed him to beat Greg Norman in a sudden death playoff for the title.

More names in the 81-player field will be announced in the coming days and weeks. The tournament activities begin on the Monday, with pro-ams scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. The 54-hole tournament, with no cuts, runs Friday through Sunday.
